FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW CHELTENHAM TOWN TO SHREWSBURY TOWN

Recent results give Cheltenham Town six points from a possible fifteen, with two wins and three defeats in their last five league games. Over their last five recorded league games, Shrewsbury Town have taken ten points from a possible fifteen: three wins, one draw and one defeat.

Cheltenham Town are 5th in League Two after 12 league games, with 18 points. Their league position and recent results are the clearest guide to the task here. Cheltenham Town are in the play-off places, below the three automatic promotion spots. Keeping that place is the first job; moving higher would give supporters more to chase.

Shrewsbury Town are 8th in League Two after 12 league games, with 17 points. They started the campaign regarded as outsiders for the play-offs. Shrewsbury Town are level on points with the side in 7th and the last play-off place. Moving above that side still matters; equal points alone do not put them in the play-offs.

The destination is The Croud Meadow in Shrewsbury. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For most supporters, base yourself around St Julian's Friars, Wyle Cop or the adjacent old-town streets rather than the business-park/stadium fringe. This keeps the post-match evening easy and still leaves a roughly half-hour walk to the ground from the best-placed central hotels.

For Cheltenham Town supporters, the point of the trip is being there for the team. Once tickets and kick-off are confirmed, work out whether the journey home leaves time for a meal or a drink, or whether a night away makes the better day of it.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Darwin's Townhouse

Darwin's Townhouse

St Julian's Friars / south side of Shrewsbury town centre

The strongest all-round MatchdayHotels choice. It is close enough to make the ground a realistic walk, but unlike a stadium-edge stay it puts you in the historic centre for pubs, food and the evening. The current reputation is notably strong, with September 2026 reviews repeatedly praising cleanliness, staff, breakfast and the combination of central location with a calmer night's sleep.

  • About 1.2 miles from New Meadow/The Croud Meadow on current mapping references, so the stadium is realistically walkable.
  • St Julian's Friars is on the southern side of the centre, close to the English Bridge/Wyle Cop side of the club's published walking route.
The match journey

KAYAK lists New Meadow about 1.2 miles away. The club's published town-centre walking approach uses Wyle Cop, English Bridge, Belle Vue Road and Hereford Road; from St Julian's Friars, allow roughly half an hour on foot rather than treating the straight-line distance as a door-to-turnstile time.

The trade-off

The sampled Friday rate is materially higher than midweek: around £170 versus £130.

Our view

The strongest all-round MatchdayHotels choice. It is close enough to make the ground a realistic walk, but unlike a stadium-edge stay it puts you in the historic centre for pubs, food and the evening. The current reputation is notably strong, with September 2026 reviews repeatedly praising cleanliness, staff, breakfast and the combination of central location with a calmer night's sleep.

Why it suits this trip

  • About 1.2 miles from New Meadow/The Croud Meadow on current mapping references, so the stadium is realistically walkable.
  • St Julian's Friars is on the southern side of the centre, close to the English Bridge/Wyle Cop side of the club's published walking route.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified and the property returned a 9.0 review score in live checks.
  • Very strong recent review pattern for breakfast, service, cleanliness and character.
  • Better post-match base than the business-park hotels because central pubs and restaurants are within an easy walk.

Getting to the ground

KAYAK lists New Meadow about 1.2 miles away. The club's published town-centre walking approach uses Wyle Cop, English Bridge, Belle Vue Road and Hereford Road; from St Julian's Friars, allow roughly half an hour on foot rather than treating the straight-line distance as a door-to-turnstile time.

Pubs and the evening

Close to the Wyle Cop and Bear Steps clusters of pubs, bars and restaurants, but set back enough to be a more sleep-friendly base than a room above a late bar.

Arriving by train

A short town-centre walk from Shrewsbury station at Castle Foregate; the club's own station-to-ground route passes through the centre before heading south.

The trade-offs

  • The sampled Friday rate is materially higher than midweek: around £170 versus £130.
  • It is an old Georgian property, so some rooms and bathrooms are smaller and upper-floor rooms involve stairs.
  • A light sleeper should still request a quieter room, although current reviews are much less noise-heavy than the nightlife-first options.

Research price context

Typically about £130 on the sampled midweek nights and about £170 on the sampled Friday nights. The weekend premium was around 31%.

Abbots Mead Hotel

St Julian's Friars / south side of Shrewsbury town centre

The closest practical hotel choice among the credible central properties checked. It gives up some boutique polish but gains football-trip usefulness: roughly 1.2 miles from the ground, free private parking, a straightforward position on the south side of town and consistently good recent feedback for cleanliness, staff and breakfast.

  • Mapped at about 1.2 miles from New Meadow/The Croud Meadow.
  • Its St Julian's Friars position is closer to the ground side of town than the station/Castle Foregate hotels while still being central.

  • Free private parking is useful for supporters driving to Shrewsbury.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified and the live search returned an 8.7 review score.
  • Recent 2026 reviews repeatedly praise cleanliness, breakfast, staff and the walkable town-centre position.

Getting to the ground

Current mapping references place New Meadow around 1.2 miles away. Its southern town-centre position means the football walk starts closer to English Bridge/Belle Vue than a station-area hotel. Allow roughly 25-30 minutes in normal conditions.

Pubs and the evening

Close enough to Wyle Cop, Bear Steps and the central pub/restaurant streets for an evening out, without being directly above a nightlife venue.

Arriving by train

Still walkable from Shrewsbury station through the centre, although the station is on the opposite, northern side of the town-centre loop.

The trade-offs

  • This is a small, traditional two-star family-run hotel rather than a polished chain or boutique luxury stay.
  • Some rooms and bathrooms are compact.
  • Parking is valuable but not unlimited; review aggregators note that manoeuvring or car movement can be necessary when busy.

Research price context

Typically about £120-£125 midweek and around £145 on the sampled Friday nights. That is a noticeable but not extreme weekend premium.

The Loopy Shrew

Bellstone / Shoplatch / central Shrewsbury

The nightlife-first choice, with an important warning. You are staying in the middle of central Shrewsbury with a lively bar/restaurant downstairs and the Bellstone, Shoplatch, Bear Steps and Wyle Cop drinking/eating areas around you. That is exactly why it wins this category, but recent 2026 reviews contain repeated, credible complaints about DJ, street and extractor noise.

  • Directly attached to a lively central bar and restaurant rather than merely being near nightlife.
  • Bellstone sits in the core town-centre evening area, close to cocktail bars, pubs and restaurants.
The match journey

KAYAK lists New Meadow about 1.4 miles away. It is walkable for an able supporter, but it sits deeper in the centre than the St Julian's Friars hotels, so allow a little over half an hour.

The trade-off

Repeated recent complaints about loud weekend music, street noise and extractor noise are a material sleep-quality risk.

That is exactly why it wins this category, but recent 2026 reviews contain repeated, credible complaints about DJ, street and extractor noise. Why it suits this trip

  • Directly attached to a lively central bar and restaurant rather than merely being near nightlife.

  • Still only about 1.4 miles from New Meadow on current mapping references.

Getting to the ground

KAYAK lists New Meadow about 1.4 miles away. It is walkable for an able supporter, but it sits deeper in the centre than the St Julian's Friars hotels, so allow a little over half an hour.

Pubs and the evening

The property's own bar/restaurant and central location make it the strongest nightlife base. The same characteristics create the main downside: late-night noise is a recurring, not isolated, review theme.

Arriving by train

Central enough to walk from Shrewsbury station, with shops, pubs and restaurants on the route.

The trade-offs

  • Repeated recent complaints about loud weekend music, street noise and extractor noise are a material sleep-quality risk.
  • No private hotel parking; nearby public car parks are typically a 5-10 minute walk.
  • Some reviews mention hot rooms / limited cooling in the historic building.
  • Weekend pricing is materially higher than midweek.

What to expect at Shrewsbury Town

All the key information for Cheltenham Town supporters heading to The Croud Meadow — from the ground and atmosphere to food, access, parking and matchday practicalities.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Croud Meadow

The ground

Cheltenham Town at Shrewsbury Town

The Croud Meadow is a four-sided, purpose-built 9,875-capacity ground on the southern edge of Shrewsbury. Its most distinctive modern feature is the South Stand's 555-place safe-standing area. In 2026 the club added fan-selected giant corner graphics, shirt-inspired block signage and permanent exterior tributes to club figures, deliberately layering Salop history onto a stadium that began life with far less inherited character than Gay Meadow.

Views from the away section

The dedicated North Stand is a steep, covered behind-goal end. The rake helps you feel close to the near goal and gives a clear view over the rows in front; the overall sightline is good, with the usual behind-goal compromise that action at the opposite end feels farther away.

Why the ground matters

The contrast between Gay Meadow and the Croud Meadow explains a large part of modern Shrewsbury identity. Gay Meadow was cramped, picturesque, impractical and inseparable from the Severn; the current stadium is functional, expandable in cultural terms and physically detached from the historic centre. The club's recent response has been to make the new ground less anonymous by installing memories of the old one.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Croud Meadow

Atmosphere & acoustics

Cheltenham Town at Shrewsbury Town

A full 1,796-capacity North Stand concentrates the visiting support into one compact end, and the roof plus steep rake help it sound fuller than an open or shallow stand. The ground is small enough that away and home noise remain in close contact.

Songs and matchday traditions

Supporter flags and displays are concentrated around the South Stand safe-standing section.

Current child mascots warm up with the club mascots Blue and Amber before leading the team out.

Anniversary-era fan votes for images and legends have become part of how the club publicly curates its history.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Croud Meadow

Food & drink

Cheltenham Town at Shrewsbury Town

Rail arrivals should meet around Castle Foregate or the bus station: Albion Bar is almost opposite Shrewsbury station, while central pubs such as the Salopian Bar reward an earlier arrival. Croud Meadow sits roughly two miles south, a 40–45-minute walk via Wyle Cop, English Bridge, Belle Vue and Hereford Road; the 2026/27 ST1 bus runs from bus station Stand S. Visiting supporters use the North Stand.

Food and drink around the ground

For a ground-side pint, the Prince of Wales in Belle Vue expressly welcomes away fans and operates a bookable matchday coach. The club also names Charles Darwin and the pub formerly called the Wild Pig, now recorded by CAMRA as Brooklands, although both have conflicting business-status reports. The stadium FanZone is explicitly open to both sets of fans.

Eat before travelling south: Shrewsbury Fish Bar suits the Sutton Farm approach, while Coleham has a chippy and the centre offers Market Hall street food or sourdough pizza. Check shirt policies, pub opening and fixture-specific searches; no re-entry is allowed after leaving the stadium perimeter.

Rail, Underground & tram

There is no useful Underground or tram alternative in Shrewsbury.

Recommended railway station
Shrewsbury railway station
Onward service
ST1 matchday shuttle from Shrewsbury Bus Station, Stand S; about 280 yards from rail station.
Rail station to ground walk
Approximately 2 miles; club estimates 40–45 minutes.
Station accessibility
Category A step-free access to all platforms using lifts where required.
Other rail alternatives
Yorton and Wellington are not recommended as convenient stadium arrival points; no verified direct onward matchday link.

Station to ground & away entrance

For the away end, head to the North Stand and follow the visiting-supporter signs and steward directions around the stadium. The ground is off Oteley Road. The exact turnstile or accessible entrance should come from your match ticket or visiting club. Walking from town, cross the English Bridge, turn right into Coleham Head and continue along Belle Vue Road and Hereford Road.

At Meole Brace roundabout, follow the signed footpaths towards Oteley Road and use the pedestrian crossings. The club notes that shorter alternatives use uneven ground.

Visiting supporter stand
North Stand (named Emcon North Stand in the current away guide); usual visiting allocation.
Ground approach
Oteley Road, Shrewsbury, SY2 6ST.
Walking route
Town centre via Wyle Cop, English Bridge, Coleham Head, Belle Vue Road, Hereford Road and Meole Brace roundabout.
Town centre walking distance
Club travel plan gives around 1.7 miles from town centre, with shorter routes over uneven ground.

Buses & local travel

Take the ST1 matchday shuttle from Stand S at Shrewsbury bus station. It calls at the front of Shirehall and then goes to the stadium, making it the simplest option if you arrive by train or spend time in town first. Return buses are scheduled to leave ten minutes after the final whistle, so confirm departure details for your fixture. The longer-distance ST2, ST3 and ST4 supporter routes were withdrawn for 2026/27, despite appearing in older guidance.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Croud Meadow

Parking

Cheltenham Town at Shrewsbury Town

Do not plan on finding free street parking near the Croud Meadow. The Sutton Farm matchday zone is permit-controlled, Meole Brace and Meole Village have residents-only restrictions, and other streets within a 20–30 minute walk have not been verified as unrestricted. The safest low-cost choice is the official Meole Brace Park & Walk. Use the Meole Brace site off Hereford Road, following signs for Park & Walk rather than the retail-park entrance.

Parking & park-and-ride

It costs £5 cash, is first come, first served, and is about 10–15 minutes from the ground. The club gives Saturday closing at 6pm and midweek closing at 10.45pm. If you want parking arranged in advance, ask the ticket office about the limited £10 stadium passes. A valid ticket or permit secures permission to park, but the club does not specify a numbered bay. Fifty additional spaces were announced in August.

A booked driveway is another option if its listing permits football parking. For a fallback that does not involve circling estates, Shirehall Overflow on London Road is an official council car park at 70p an hour, free on Sundays, bank holidays and after 6pm. Allow roughly half an hour or more to reach the ground on foot, or use ST1 from Shirehall if it is running.

Arrive about an hour before kick-off and allow around four hours for the whole visit, including both walks and leaving afterwards. Do not use Lidl, Aldi, Blue Diamond or Meole Brace Retail Park as match parking: customer restrictions and ANPR apply, and the full visit will outlast many short-stay limits. For evening or cup fixtures, check the Park & Walk closing time before relying on it.

Parking verdict
Booking is advisable if an allocated space is important; otherwise £5 authorised Meole Brace Park & Walk is the best-value matchday choice. No independently verified unrestricted free street is recommended.
Free option — council car park
Shirehall Overflow, London Road SY2 6NS: free Sundays, public/bank holidays and 6pm–8am; chargeable Saturday daytime. This is off-street parking, not a free-street claim.
Legal restrictions — Sutton Farm
Matchday residents/visitor permit zone includes Ash Close, Beaumont Way, Broadway Close, Broseley Close, Burway Drive, Charlton Close, Coalport Drive, Condover Drive, Drayton Gardens, Faintree Avenue, Garmston Road, Hexham Way, Malvern Close, Mawley Close, Melrose Drive, Newport Drive, Prescott Close, Rowley Court, Rowton Road, Stretton Close, Sunny Bank Road, Sutton Road from Oteley Road to Sutton Way, Tilstock Crescent and Whitton Close. Active during stadium match/event hours; entrance signs govern.
Legal restrictions — Meole Brace
Club prohibits non-resident matchday parking in Meole Brace Estate, Meole Village and the Park & Ride approach road; precise street-side order boundaries not independently mapped.

Legal restrictions — golf club loop

No parking on grass verges.
Matchday availability — Meole Brace Park & Walk
Spaces on first-come, first-served basis; no pre-book or guaranteed space.
Matchday availability — residential/free alternatives
2022 visitor report mentions Shrewsbury Business Park or a pub car park, but neither current proprietor permission nor street-side legality is verified, so neither is recommended.
Reported experience — September 2025
A local commenter quoted £10 cash for stadium parking and mentioned cheaper parking further afield without verified named permissions or current supply. This is anecdotal, not a legal or availability guarantee.
Walk — Meole Brace Park & Walk
Club estimates 10–15 minutes to the ground; exact walk to away turnstiles may be longer.
Walk — Shirehall
Club quotes 1.3 miles from Shirehall to stadium; allow around 25–35 minutes plus access to the North Stand.
Arrive by — parking
Editorial guidance: aim to be parked roughly an hour before kick-off; arrive earlier for high-demand fixtures or first-come parking.
Paid fallback
Shirehall Overflow is open 24h; £0.70/hour, maximum £5.60/day, MiPermit code 740091. Abbey Foregate has a matching published tariff and is also open 24h.
Official Park & Walk
Meole Brace site SY3 9NB; £5 cash, pay steward on arrival; club says closes 18:00 Saturdays and 22:45 midweek.
Park & Walk entrance
Off Hereford Road; council instructs turning into Darwin’s Edge at traffic lights then following road right, postcode SY3 9PW for new entrance. Former retail-park entrance near Pets at Home is closed.
Booking recommendation
Request a £10 stadium parking ticket/permit through 01743 273943 or tickets@shrewsburytown.co.uk; club guarantees parking permission for ticket/permit holders but does not state a numbered bay is assigned. Fifty additional spaces were announced 11 August 2026.
Supermarket permission/time limit
Club warns Lidl, Aldi, Blue Diamond and Meole Brace Retail Park have customer stay limits and ANPR; no permission for all-match stadium parking verified. A 2023 visiting-club guide specified 90 minutes at Lidl, but this is historic, not a current confirmed limit.
Total dwell time
Plan for around four hours: approximately 45–60 minutes before kick-off, 105–115 minutes for football/half-time/stoppages, both walks and a post-match buffer. Cup extra time, penalties or shopping can take longer.
After the match
Club prioritises pedestrians, cycles, buses and coaches before cars; stadium exit may be held. A 2022 visiting fan reported a wait leaving Meole Brace Park & Ride, but this is anecdotal, not a current queue estimate.
Meole Brace council ordinary Park & Ride rules
Free council parking is service-only, and users who are not taking the bus need council permission. The club separately provides a £5 steward-authorised football Park & Walk arrangement. Ordinary P&R car parks generally lock after final bus; club football Park & Walk states separate matchday closures.
Future operation — Meole Brace
Council announcement of 14 October 2026 supersedes planned November closure: Meole Brace Park & Ride bus service retained from 1 November for three years, with 20-minute daytime service Monday–Saturday. Matchday Park & Walk timings beyond that date need reconfirmation.

Comfort & weather

Cheltenham Town at Shrewsbury Town

The forecast loads when you open this topic. Comfort and shelter guidance is below.

Legroom is ample, the stand is covered and the concourse is well laid out, making this a much more comfortable away end than the generic 'modern facilities' label suggested. The steep design also reduces the feeling of being set back from the pitch.

Worth knowing

Cheltenham Town at Shrewsbury Town

For a visiting supporter, the most interesting thing is the mismatch between the tidy modern stadium in front of you and the intensely place-specific club history behind it. The new ground does not explain Shrewsbury by itself; the loggerheads, Salop language, safe-standing story, legend banners and constant references back to Gay Meadow do.

Rail, Underground & tram

Use Shrewsbury railway station, then walk to the town bus station for the ST1 football shuttle. The bus station is about 280 yards away, and the shuttle goes directly to the Croud Meadow via Shirehall. Check the club’s matchday arrangements before choosing your train home.

If you prefer to walk, allow around 40–45 minutes from the station along the town-centre and Belle Vue Road route. This is a substantial walk rather than a station immediately outside the ground. There is no useful Underground or tram alternative in Shrewsbury.

Away coaches

If you are travelling on an official away coach, use the joining point and return instructions issued by your visiting club or coach organiser. Coaches approach the stadium from Oteley Road, but the publicly checked club guidance does not establish a universal away-coach parking or collection bay.

Do not arrange an independent pick-up on the road outside the ground. The club prohibits roadside collection there and manages vehicle access at its gates. Coach operators needing separate parking can check Shropshire Council’s Abbey Foregate car park, which lists 12 coach/HGV bays and free coach parking, but it is not a confirmed visiting-coach collection point.

Accessible journeys

Arrange accessible match parking and seating before travelling, preferably through the club ticket office and your visiting club. Blue Badge holders can apply for paid dedicated parking within the stadium car park, and the away end has a wheelchair-accessible viewing balcony. Pitchside accommodation may also be possible by arrangement.

Shrewsbury station has step-free access to every platform, but that does not make the long journey to the stadium step-free throughout. The club requests accessible shuttle vehicles without guaranteeing every departure; contact the disability liaison officer at dslo@shrewsburytown.co.uk to confirm the right parking, vehicle and entrance for your needs.

Rail accessibility
Shrewsbury station has Category A step-free access to all platforms and lifts.
Accessible stadium parking
Dedicated paid spaces for Blue Badge holders by advance application to club ticket office: 01743 273943, tickets@shrewsburytown.co.uk.
Away wheelchair position
Wheelchair-accessible away supporters balcony; limited provision and potential pitchside adjustments.
Disability liaison contact
dslo@shrewsburytown.co.uk
Shuttle accessibility
Club requests wheelchair-adapted buses from providers; individual ST1 departure accessibility not independently guaranteed.
Council park and ride accessibility
Council describes low-floor buses with ramps on its ordinary park-and-ride network; this does not establish ST1 vehicle accessibility.
After the match

After the match

If you came on ST1, go straight to the bus departure area behind the South Stand when the match ends. The club says return buses leave ten minutes after the final whistle, so do not assume there will be a later service if you linger. Allow a sensible margin before a booked train.

If driving, pedestrians and coaches have priority, and you may be held while crowds clear. Walking back to Shirehall or an authorised Park & Walk space can help avoid waiting inside the stadium car park, but you still need time for traffic and the return walk. Always check the Park & Walk closing time, especially after evening cup games.

ST1 return departure
Scheduled ten minutes after the final whistle; club away fans guide places pickup behind the South Stand.
Stadium egress priority
Pedestrians, cyclists, buses and coaches take priority over cars.
Rail connection caution
Station about two miles away; plan around ST1 capacity, traffic and a 40–45-minute walking fallback.
Park & Walk closing
18:00 Saturday / 22:45 midweek stated in club 2026/27 plan; verify for atypical kick-off or cup extra time.
Historic reported exit experience
2022 fan report notes queues leaving Meole Brace; other older fans report faster exits from outlying parking. Not a reliable current queue prediction.

Where to stay

Stay in Shrewsbury town centre if you want to arrive by train, eat before the game and avoid driving again. You will be close to the station and ST1 pick-up at the bus station, but the ground is still around two miles away, so plan the outward and return transfer.

A hotel near Meole Brace may shorten the stadium journey if you are driving, but check the actual walking route and whether hotel parking is included. There is no need to stay overnight for a straightforward daytime trip; it becomes worth considering when an evening match leaves a tight last-train connection.

Best area for rail visitors
Shrewsbury town centre, convenient for railway station and ST1 bus station departure.
Ground location relative to centre
Stadium south of town centre, around two miles from Shrewsbury station.
Hotel parking entitlement
No specific hotel parking entitlement or rate was independently verified.
Overnight trigger
Useful to consider for evening or long-distance journeys if safe post-match rail connection cannot be made.

Matchday services and parking arrangements can change. Confirm current details before travelling.

AWAY-DAY OVERVIEW

Before you head to the ground

Rail arrivals should meet around Castle Foregate or the bus station: Albion Bar is almost opposite Shrewsbury station, while central pubs such as the Salopian Bar reward an earlier arrival.

Read full overview Hide full overview

Rail arrivals should meet around Castle Foregate or the bus station: Albion Bar is almost opposite Shrewsbury station, while central pubs such as the Salopian Bar reward an earlier arrival. Croud Meadow sits roughly two miles south, a 40–45-minute walk via Wyle Cop, English Bridge, Belle Vue and Hereford Road; the 2026/27 ST1 bus runs from bus station Stand S. Visiting supporters use the North Stand.

PUB / BAR

Charles Darwin

Sutton Road, Shrewsbury, SY2 6HN
15 min walkAway access: check
BEST FORnear-ground ale · driver rendezvous
MATCHDAY INTELAn established near-ground away-pub suggestion with traditional ales and darts, backed by the club and supporters’ association. It saves trekking back into town before kick-off.
